Rjam (Vizianagaram dist): GMR Institute of Technology (GMRIT)-a future-ready engineering and technology institution based at Rajam in Vizianagaram District in Andhra Pradesh-has been notified as a deemed to be university by the Ministry of Education under the UGC Act This positions the institution for its next phase of academic and institutional expansion.

Established in 1997 and backed by strong governance under GMR Varalakshmi Foundation (the CSR arm of GMR Group), GMRIT is known for academic excellence, strong industry integration, and innovation-driven, multidisciplinary education. It has built a reputation for outcome-driven education, industry integration, and disciplined institutional management.

Autonomous since 2012, the Institute has consistently aligned curricula with evolving industry needs and emerging technologies.

GMRIT’s academic credibility is reflected in its three-cycle NAAC accreditation, NBA accreditation across all eligible programs, and its presence in the Times Higher Education Rankings 2026.

According to a release, the institute has also developed strong industry linkages, ensuring internships for all students and maintaining a robust placement record with leading Indian and global employers.

The 130-acre integrated campus, combined with improved connectivity through the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport, positions GMRIT as a scalable education hub capable of attracting national and international partnerships.

Commenting on the development, Ashwini Saxena, CEO, GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, said, “The deemed to be university status provides GMRIT with strategic autonomy to launch multidisciplinary programs, deepen research and innovation, and build global collaborations, in line with India’s future workforce and knowledge economy needs.”

Going forward, GMRIT plans to expand into multidisciplinary sciences and applied research areas, including medical and allied health sciences, strengthening its contribution to India’s higher education and skill development ecosystem, she stated.
